Spot Picks: Family-Friendly Mountain Huts for an Overnight Stay
Days are spent hiking, scrambling over rocks and exploring mountain streams. Evenings bring hearty meals, tired legs and an early night high in the Alps. These four family-friendly mountain huts in Kinderregion make staying overnight in the mountains part of the adventure.
GLATTALP HUT SAC
Tucked away at the far end of the Muota Valley, the Glattalp Hut SAC sits at 1,896 metres on a large alpine plateau. A small cable car from Sahli makes the journey easy for younger children. Around the hut, sheep, goats, cows and horses graze among open meadows, while a stream and the nearby Glattalp Lake invite little explorers to roam.
GLÄRNISCH HUT SAC
High above the Klöntal Valley, the Glärnisch Hut SAC clings to the slopes beneath the mighty Glärnisch massif. Families who make the climb are rewarded with sweeping views, mountain adventures and plenty of space to explore. Streams, boulders and a climbing garden keep children busy, while “Family Holiday” packages offer supervised activities for kids and guided tours for grown ups.
SPITZMEILEN HUT SAC
Perched high above the Schils Valley at 2,087 metres, the modern Spitzmeilen Hut SAC sits beneath the distinctive Spitzmeilen peak. The family-friendly approach via Maschgenkamm leads through the spectacular UNESCO world heritage site Sardona Tectonic Arena. Meadows, streams and small mountain lakes provide plenty of opportunities for kids to explore nature, while after dinner, small rooms with single beds offer a welcome retreat.
GAFADURA HUT LAV
High above Planken at 1,428 metres, the Gafadura Hut LAV enjoys sweeping views across the Rhine Valley. The two-hour climb is manageable for families, with the “Mila in the Wonder Tunnel” puzzle trail helping to keep kids moving. At the top, a sunny terrace and hearty meals provide a well-earned reward.
